DAKU ! Dunia Remajaku Seru - My Fun Adolescent World

Have you ever had a crush on someone? Experienced changes during puberty and gone through the colorful life of adolescent period?

Adolescent period is indeed a fun period, having social life that is no longer the same and beginning to like someone of the opposite sex or even the same sex, which could be a confusing stage for some young people. Aside from that, some begin to go on a date and they even talk about marriage as if they were adults. There is nothing wrong with that. It happens due to their hormonal and biological changes as they grow up.

Nonetheless, facts have shown that a lot of youth go through their adolescent period without any guidance or adequate information from parents, school or even their peers. This information gap leaves them prone to any violence or other consequences of trying out new things, such as unplanned pregnancy which often lead to unsafe abortion, contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV or many other cases due to their lack of knowledge, thus leaving them unable to make an informed decision to protect their sexual and reproductive health. Parents consider it a taboo to talk about sexuality, while teachers do not discuss sexual and reproductive health thoroughly. Thus, youth learn about it from their peers or from the Internet and other unreliable sources without any guide from a reliable and non-judging person that can provide accurate and reliable information.

Rutgers WPF Indonesia, along with its partner organizations, has launched DAKU! Dunia Remajaku Seru (My Fun Adolescent World)! Program, a capacity building program that will enable high school teachers and peer educators to share their knowledge on sexual and reproductive health with their students to raise awareness on their sexuality and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).

The subjects in the training will serve as guidance for teachers and peer educators in sharing their knowledge in class or students meeting.

The training manual of DAKU! Papua program consists of 15 subjects, as follows:

  1. Everything starts from Me
  2. Emotional Changes
  3. Is Your Body Changing Too?
  4. Friendship and Other Relationships
  5. Gender (Male and Female)
  6. Fight for Your Right
  7. Sexuality and Love
  8. Pregnancy
  9. Protect Yourself against STIs and HIV&AIDS
  10. HIV&AIDS – You can Play Your Role too
  11. Drugs and Youth World
  12. Love Should not Hurt
  13. Your Future, Dream and Plan
  14. My Creative Note: My Message for You

In the past, we used to be concerned and become judgmental when young people suffered from sexual and reproductive health related issues due to the lack of knowledge. By providing youth with adequate information on SRHR, we are optimistic that they will be able to make an informed decision and know all the consequences of their action.

DAKU! Program has been implemented at senior high schools and youth communities in DKI Jakarta, Bali, Jambi, and Lampung in collaboration with Yayasan SIKOK, Yayasan Pelita Ilmu, Perkumpulan Keluarga Berencana Indonesia (PKBI) Bali, dan PKBI Lampung as the implementing partners.

Rutgers WPF Indonesia welcomes partnerships with other organizations or institutions including donors, the government and the private sectors to share this program in a broader scale; we also welcome any financial supports that will enable the implementation and scaling up of the program.
